I work for a company that makes office furniture and when we need a different colour on a office chair for instance, rather than shot the chair again we change it in Photoshop, does this negate copyright or not. http://www.ecomfg.com/ if anyone knows the answer I would be interested to know.
If they are posting them online at full resolution, seems to me the author is allowing others to use their product... is that a wrong assumption?

right. and that is, why I prefer natural textures :). German Telekom even tries to get a copyright for the color "magenta", so everybody using that color would break copyright laws, if they win their case. Let's hope that this does not get completely out of hand!

In a globalized world where even life forms can be copyrighted, the issue Lawrence has raised is really important. If the copyright would belong to the manufacturer of the fabrics (and not to the photographer) then we wouldn't be able to take photos of anything manmade. Your fabrics (photos taken in a Beligian Cafe) as well as the door textures would be copyrighted by other people and not by the photographer. Dosch Design, 3dTotal and others who are making money out of textures would have to close there doors because of the (certainly expensive) violation of someone others rights. Looks like another nice gold mine for lawyers, doesn't it?
